Summary

We Are Water Protectors is a children’s book by the author and illustrator Carole Lindstrom. The book is the story of a young girl, Anishinaabe, who learns the importance of taking care of water. It showcases the beauty of Indigenous knowledge about water, and how everyone can take simple actions to protect it.

The story begins with Anishinaabe exploring the nearby river. She is in awe of the beauty of the water and its power to heal and sustain all life. As she takes in the sights and sounds, she listens to her Grandma’s teachings about the power and importance of water. After her Grandma explains that she is a Water Protector, Anishinaabe decides to become one too.

In the next chapter, Anishinaabe discovers the consequences of neglecting the water. The river is polluted with trash, and the animals living in it are struggling to survive. Anishinaabe takes it upon herself to clean up the river and restore balance in the natural world. In the process, she teaches her community how to appreciate the importance of keeping the environment healthy.

In the following chapter, Anishinaabe learns more about the water cycle, and she also discovers how human activities can destabilize it. She learns that people must do their part to protect and conserve water. To illustrate this point, Anishinaabe’s Grandma tells her a story about a farmer downstream who refuses to stop polluting the river. Despite repeated warnings, the farmer continues to pollute, and the entire downstream area suffers from the consequences.

In the fourth chapter, Anishinaabe realizes that her efforts have become bigger than just supporting her local community. She decides to make it her mission to spread the message and share her knowledge about protecting water with people all over the world. With the help of her family and friends, Anishinaabe goes on a journey and meets other Water Protectors who share their own stories and experiences.

In the final chapter, Anishinaabe discovers there is still much work to be done to protect water. Despite the hardships and struggles, she is reminded of the importance of hope and optimism in times of difficulty. Anishinaabe reflects on her journey and gives thanks for all the wonderful things the water has done for her and for the world. She also reflects on area where work still needs to be done, and she pledges to carry on the important legacy of being a Water Protector.

Overall, We Are Water Protectors is an empowering story that shows the importance of protecting water and how everyone can step up and make a difference. Not only does it educate its readers on the value of water, but it also teaches us about how little actions can have a big impact on the environment. Anishinaabe is an inspiring role model for all, and she teaches us that together we can accomplish great things.
