The Worrysaurus by Jessica Souhami is an educational and enjoyable book about learning how to manage stressful and anxious feelings. It follows the story of a young T-Rex named Rex who is prone to worrying a lot. He is joined by his curious and helpful friends Trudy the Triceratops and Graham the Stegosaurus who together embark on a journey of discovery to help Rex learn to better manage his worrying.
The first chapter introduces Rex and his worries. After explaining his anxious thoughts, Rex begins to feel overwhelmed and powerless. Trudy and Graham come to his aid to offer their knowledge and comfort. Graham, in particular, suggests that Rex take a break and go for a stroll.
In chapter two, Rex, Trudy and Graham take a walk around a forest where they discover different dinosaurs with their own worries. Each of them offer Rex advice and support to help him manage his anxiety and rationalize his thoughts. By learning from different individuals and listening to their experiences, Rex begins to understand the importance of self-care activities such as spending time in nature, connecting with friends, and embracing positive thoughts.
In chapter three, Trudy, Graham and Rex decide to go on a picnic where they once again come across dinosaurs with their own worries. After witnessing a Tyrannosaurus’ panic attack, Rex and his friends try to talk the individual out of his frighten state. But before they could do so, they find a tunnel which leads them to a magical valley.
In the magical valley, Rex and his friends learn that worrying, in some way is beneficial in helping them find solutions to their problems. To cope with his anxiety, Rex and his friends practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing and visualization. They also learn to accept their worries as part of their life, and start exploring ways to cope with their feelings.
In chapter five, Rex and his friends come across other dinosaurs who are dealing with their worries differently. Through these conversations, they learn to look at their worries from different points of view and understand that everyone has their own way of managing their anxiety.
In chapter six, Rex’s worrying begins to subside as he gets to understand his anxiety and how to better manage it. He thanks Trudy and Graham for their help and realizes how helpful it can be to have a support system when dealing with his worries.
