Summary

The Whale Who Wanted More is a children’s book written by authors Deborah Bruss and Steve Jenkins. The story follows a whale named Wing who is never satisfied with the food he eats in the ocean. He wants something different, something he has never tasted before. On his quest for something new, he meets other creatures and makes some unusual friends.

In chapter one, Wing begins his journey disturbed by the same food he has tasted each day in the ocean. He meets a penguin who suggests he try a different kind of food. Wing makes the mistake of believing that the penguin wanted to help him, not realizing he was selling Wing a food product.

In chapter two, Wing leaves the penguin behind and swims further looking for something new. He meets a fish with bright purple scales and a message that reads “A Piece Of Something Different”. This time Wing is more cautious and doesn’t trust the fish’s message. He decides to find out for himself what “something different” means and swims away.

In chapter three, Wing reaches a ship where he eventually comes face-to-face with a group of humans. They offer him food, which he refuses to try. He insists on tasting something different. The humans become intrigued by Wing and, remembering the message on the fish’s scales, go to find him some of the “something different”.

In chapter four, Wing is presented with a giant bucket of popcorn, which is something he has never seen before. He decides to give it a try and soon finds out how much he loves it. The humans are so pleased with Wing’s enthusiasm for the snack that they give him more popcorn.

In chapter five, Wing says goodbye to his new human friends, his stomach full of the delicious popcorn he’d been searching for. He realizes that there can be more to life than just the ocean and fishes and decides to travel around the world in search of new adventures and delicious foods.

In the epilogue, Wing returns home and begins to search for even more tastes and flavors. He has learned that the world is full of exciting things and life is too short to be limited to eating the same old foods he’d been accustomed to. He inspired others to try out new tastes and explore what the world has to offer.

The Whale Who Wanted More is a whimsical and inspiring story with an important moral: life is too short to stay within the same boundaries. Wing’s journey encourages children to explore beyond what is comfortable and step into the unknown. He helps them learn that there is always something new to be found, if we’re willing to go out and look.
