Summary

The Scarecrows' Wedding is a heartwarming children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. It follows two scarecrows, Betsy and Abel, as they plan for their upcoming wedding. Along the way, they have to overcome obstacles such as bad weather and a grumpy toad. In the end, Betsy and Abel manage to get married despite the obstacles in their way.

In Chapter One, we are introduced to Betsy and Abel, two scarecrows who are getting ready for their wedding. They plan to get everything ready by the day of the wedding which is only a few weeks away. We are also introduced to the other characters in the book, like the grumpy toad, the helpful rat, and the friendly blackbird. We also learn that the obstacles that stand in the way of their wedding are more than just the rain.

In Chapter Two, Betsy and Abel start to search for the materials they need to make their wedding outfits. They go to the junkyard to find some scraps and eventually find enough fabric to make two beautiful bridal gowns. We learn how resourceful and creative Betsy and Abel are when it comes to finding what they need.

In Chapter Three, it starts to rain and Betsy and Abel have to find a place to stay. They come across a small shed with a friendly mouse who helps them make their wedding outfits. We learn that when things get tough, it is often nice to have a friend to lean on for help.

In Chapter Four, the rain stops and Betsy and Abel continue their preparations for their wedding. They find the perfect place for the wedding which is a hill overlooking the countryside. We learn that sometimes the best solution is not always the most obvious one.

In Chapter Five, the day of the wedding finally arrives. Despite the grumpy toad and the bad weather, the couple exchange their vows and have a beautiful wedding day. We are reminded that true love conquers all and that no obstacle can keep two hearts in love from uniting.

In Chapter Six, we learn that although the obstacles to the wedding were difficult to overcome, the couple still managed to plan a perfect wedding. We get to witness how Betsy and Abel’s love is stronger than any obstacle they face.
