Summary

This book is about a brave and determined civil rights activist, Rosa Parks. The book, Rosa Parks – Little People, Big Dreams, admirably covers how Rosa Parks effectively changed the world with her brave stand against racial segregation, inspiring a nation.

The focus of the book is Rosa Parks’ amazing story, from her poor childhood in Alabama to campaigning for equal rights on the number fifty-four bus in Montgomery. The book begins by detailing her birth and childhood, where she already showed her determination and courage. As a young child she helped her mother around the house and received her determination and dignity from her parents and grandparents.

The book continues to explain how an incident on the bus changed Rosa Parks’ life and the world. On December 1st 1955, tired from a long day at work, working as a seamstress in a department store, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person, which was the law of the time in the South. She was arrested for her small act of civil disobedience but it didn’t take long for people in Montgomery to take action and organize a successful bus boycott taking place for over one year. The action taken by Montgomery’s citizens however did not stop there. They continued to push forward for the integration of their city inspiring people across America.

The rest of the book chronicles the struggle of the civil rights movement with cases such as the Montgomery City Bus Case and the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA). Rosa continued to take part in civil action and was even jailed and fined numerous times for her protest. The book continues to discuss the fact how Rosa Parks and the actions of Montgomery went on to inspire a nation.

The book finally wraps up with the passing of Rosa Parks in 2005, aged 92. In her later years she continued to fight for civil rights and encouraged people to take a stand against injustice.

Rosa Parks is an astounding example of how determination and courage can lead to amazing things. She faced opposition and racism her entire life but still kept on to forge a better future for herself and those around her. Her story and the story of the civil rights movement is a testament to the power of group action and the courage of just one individual. Rosa Parks was a major proponent of equality and justice and despite her small stature she accomplished enormous things during her lifetime.
