Summary

Chapter 1

In this chapter, children learn about the alphabet and short vowel/consonant sounds. The book uses fun and engaging activities to help children practice the new concepts and become confident readers. For example, they learn that the letter ‘a’ makes a short ‘a’ sound such as in ‘apple’ and they test their memory by matching pictures of everyday objects with the corresponding letter ‘a’.

Chapter 2

In this chapter, children learn to form and read simple words. By completing activities such as writing words, filling in letters, making new words using tiles, they learn to identify the simple ‘au’ diphthong and how it forms different words such as ‘sauce’, ‘caught’ and ‘haul’.

Chapter 3

In this chapter, children learn to read words using consonant clusters. Through the different activities provided in this chapter, such as the phoneme frames and place mats, they learn to read and write various words that are made up of consonant clusters, such as ‘crab’ and ‘brick’.

Chapter 4

The fourth chapter helps children become more confident readers through various activities. Through writing words on the group puzzles and matching the words to the pictures, children further practice reading and writing, while also reinforcing their knowledge of consonant clusters. Some examples of the consonant clusters in this chapter include ‘sk’ in ‘skates’ and ‘scr’ in ‘scrub’.

Chapter 5

In the fifth chapter, children continue to hone their reading and writing skills. Through completing activities such as unscrambling words and creating silly sentences, they are able to learn and practice words with split vowel sounds, such as ‘mate’, ‘coat’, and ‘stain’.

Chapter 6

The last chapter of this book focuses on helping children become more proficient readers. Through completing activities such as picking the correct word in a sentence and circling the incorrect word, they practice their reading and comprehension skills. Additionally, this chapter also encourages children to apply their newfound knowledge of alphabet, diphthongs, consonant clusters, and split vowel sounds, to read complete sentences. For example, they are encouraged to read and correctly fill in the blanks in a sentence: “The ______ is big and green.”
