Chapter 1
The first chapter of the book Read With Oxford: Stage 1: Julia Donaldson’s Songbirds: My Phonics Activity Book is an introduction to phonics and some of the basic building blocks that make up words. It explains the concept of blending, segmenting and blending sounds. The book introduces the reader to the seven differenst letter sounds and how they can be combined to form simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. To help reinforce the lesson, the book also includes a word search and several “fill in the blank” activities. At the end of the chapter readers are asked to review what they’ve just learned by writing down the words they’ve created. For example, the word “b-a-t” can be blended to form “bat.”

It also introduces the reader to syllables and how they are broken into individual sounds. Examples of two-syllable words include “caterpillar” and “butterfly.” At the end of the chapter readers are encouraged to practice their newly learned skills by identifying words that have two or more syllables. For example, the word “telegraph” can be broken down into its two syllables: “te” and “legraph.”
Chapter 3
The third chapter of the book Read With Oxford: Stage 1: Julia Donaldson’s Songbirds: My Phonics Activity Book focuses on building longer words from smaller words. This chapter explains the concept of syllable division by presenting the reader with many words that have multiple syllables for them to practice combining various sounds together to create longer words. Examples of longer words include “umbrella,” “homework,” and “dictionary.” At the end of the chapter readers are asked to identify the number of syllables in each of the words provided. For example, the word “umbrella” contains four syllables: “um,” “brel,” “la,” and “uh”.
Chapter 4
The fourth chapter of the book Read With Oxford: Stage 1: Julia Donaldson’s Songbirds: My Phonics Activity Book is all about rhyming words. The chapter explains the concept of rhyme and how it is used to create poetry, song lyrics, and other forms of literature. It also provides the reader with a set of rhyming words for them to work with in order to practice this skill. Examples of rhyming words include “cat” and “bat,” “snow” and “glow,” and “blue” and “shoe.” At the end of the chapter readers are asked to identify other words that rhyme with the words provided. For example, the words “cat” and “bat” rhyme with the word “hat.”
