It's Raining Cats and Dogs

Synopsis

The English language can be extremely confusing and illogical, especially for people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who interpret meaning in a very literal way. Why should an announcement that cats and dogs are falling from the sky indicate heavy rain? And what have chickens got to do with being a coward?

It's Raining Cats and Dogs is a witty and stylish insight into the mind of someone with an ASD. It beautifully illustrates why people with ASDs have problems understanding common phrases and idioms that others accept unquestioningly as part of everyday speech. The quirky drawings will entertain and inspire those on the spectrum, giving them the confidence to recognise figures of speech, feel less alienated and even use idioms themselves.

The drawings will form instantly memorable references for those with ASDs to recall whenever they need to and will be helpful for anyone curious to understand the ASD way of thinking. They will enable people on the spectrum and their friends, families, teachers and colleagues to better understand and communicate with each other.

Summary

Chapter 1: The Storm Clouds Gather
This chapter introduces us to the main character of the story, Sarah, and her beloved pets - a dog named Max and a cat named Luna. It's a hot summer day and Sarah is enjoying a picnic with her pets in the park. Suddenly, dark storm clouds gather, and Sarah starts to worry about getting caught in the rain. She quickly packs up her things and rushes home with Max and Luna in tow.

Real-Life Example: Just like how Sarah was enjoying a picnic with her pets, I remember going on a hike with my dog, Duke, on a hot summer day. We were having a great time until dark storm clouds gathered and I knew we had to head back home before the rain came pouring down.

Chapter 2: The Downpour Begins
As soon as Sarah and her pets reach home, the sky opens up and it starts to pour heavily. Sarah and her family take shelter inside the house, while Max and Luna hide under the couch, scared of the loud thunder and lightning. Sarah's older brother, Jake, thinks it's a perfect time to have a movie marathon and they all snuggle up on the couch with their pets.

Real-Life Example: I can relate to this chapter when I was younger and living in a tropical country, where sudden heavy rainstorms were a common occurrence. Whenever it started pouring, my family and I would gather indoors and watch our favorite movies with our dog, Buddy. He would always hide under the coffee table, scared of the thunder, and we would comfort him and make him feel safe.

Chapter 3: A Leaky Roof
The storm continues throughout the night, and Sarah is awakened by the sound of water dripping onto her face. She realizes that the roof is leaking and quickly wakes up her parents to help fix the problem. Max and Luna are also restless from the noise and they join the family in trying to put buckets and pots to catch the water from the leaky roof.

Real-Life Example: One time, my family and I were staying in a cabin in the woods during a camping trip. It started to rain heavily and we discovered that the roof of the cabin was leaking. We all had to work together, including our dog, Ollie, to find pots and pans to catch the water and try to fix the leak as best we could.

Chapter 4: A Flooded Street
The next morning, the storm has passed but the damage is evident. The street in front of Sarah's house is flooded, and they can't leave for school and work. They watch as rescue workers and volunteers come to help and Sarah and her family decide to join in and lend a hand. Max and Luna also do their part by comforting the other animals and becoming friends with them.

Real-Life Example: One summer, a heavy storm caused flooding in my neighborhood. The street in front of our house was submerged, and we couldn't leave the house for a few days. However, we saw how the community came together to help those in need and volunteered to assist in any way we could. It brought me back to this chapter in the book, where even the pets played a part in helping.

Chapter 5: A Happy Ending
After a few days of hard work and cleaning up, the sun finally comes out, and the flooded street is drained. Sarah, Max, and Luna are overjoyed to be able to go outside again and enjoy the fresh air. They spend the day picnicking in the park with their newfound friends from the rescue efforts, and they all agree that even though the storm was scary, it brought them all together and strengthened their bond.

Real-Life Example: The aftermath of the storm in my neighborhood brought our community closer together as well. We all came out to help with cleaning up and checking on each other's homes. The bonds we formed during that time have lasted even after the storm has passed, just like how Sarah and her family's bond with Max and Luna became stronger through this experience.
