Synopsis

MIGHTY BATTLES! REVOLUTION! DEATH! WAR! (AND HIS SONS TERROR AND PANIC, AND DAUGHTER CLANCY).

The oldest and most inscrutable empire on the Discworld is in turmoil, brought about by the revolutionary treatise What I did on My Holidays. Workers are uniting, with nothing to lose but their water buffaloes. Warlords are struggling for power. War (and Clancy) are spreading throughout the ancient cities.

And all that stands in the way of terrible doom for everyone is:

Rincewind the Wizard, who can't even spell the word 'wizard'...
Cohen the barbarian hero, five foot tall in his surgical sandals, who has had a lifetime's experience of not dying...

...and a very special butterfly.

Summary

Chapter 1: The Mind Boggles

* Synopsis: Sir Terry Pratchett introduces the Discworld, a flat world carried on the backs of four elephants standing on the back of a giant turtle. The story begins in Ankh-Morpork, where a young wizard named Rincewind is hired to help a wealthy man named Twoflower find the Edge of the World.
* Example: "The Discworld hangs in the air, because, well, that's the way it is. Nobody knows why it doesn't fall, but it doesn't. And if you ask any of the Philosophers at Unseen University they'll tell you, in their best superior manner, that it's because the turtle moves."

Chapter 2: The Luggage

* Synopsis: Rincewind reluctantly agrees to help Twoflower, who brings along his mysterious Luggage, a sentient chest that follows its owner everywhere. Rincewind, Twoflower, and Luggage set off on their journey, encountering various strange and wonderful beings along the way.
* Example: "The Luggage was a sorry sight. It was covered in dents, scratches, and luggage labels. But, most importantly, it was alive. It trundled along on a thousand tiny legs, its trunk extended as it sniffed the air."

Chapter 3: Not the Coast

* Synopsis: Rincewind and Twoflower reach the Edge of the World, but to their surprise, it is not a cliff but a vast desert. They encounter a group of barbarians who mistake Rincewind for a magician and demand that he perform a spell.
* Example: "And there, before them, was the Edge of the World. Or, rather, it wasn't. Instead, there was a vast, sandy desert stretching away to the horizon."

Chapter 4: The Sweeper

* Synopsis: Rincewind, Twoflower, and the Luggage flee the barbarians and encounter Death, the personification of death in the Discworld. Death reveals that he is on the hunt for a rogue wizard who stole a powerful artifact.
* Example: "Death was a tall, thin figure. He wore a black robe and a hood that covered his face. In his hand, he carried a scythe."

Chapter 5: The Thieves' Guild

* Synopsis: Rincewind and Twoflower are captured by the Thieves' Guild in Ankh-Morpork. They escape with the help of a talented thief named Nobby Nobbs and his accomplice Colon.
* Example: "The Thieves' Guild was a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. It was a place where the laws of gravity seemed to be suspended, and shadows danced in the flickering torchlight."

Chapter 6: The Patrician

* Synopsis: Rincewind and Twoflower are summoned to the palace of the Patrician, the ruler of Ankh-Morpork. The Patrician reveals that the rogue wizard is planning to destroy the city and must be stopped.
* Example: "The Patrician was a large, imposing figure. He wore a black velvet robe and a gold chain around his neck. His eyes were dark and piercing."

Chapter 7: The Library

* Synopsis: Rincewind, Twoflower, and the Luggage search for the rogue wizard in the Unseen University Library. They encounter a librarian named Lu-Tze, who helps them find the information they need.
* Example: "The Unseen University Library was a vast and ancient place. It was filled with books and scrolls, all bound in leather and gold. The air was heavy with the smell of parchment and ink."

Chapter 8: The Magician

* Synopsis: Rincewind and Twoflower confront the rogue wizard, who is revealed to be a former student of Unseen University. The wizard tries to destroy the city, but is stopped by Rincewind and his friends.
* Example: "The wizard was a young man with long, black hair and a goatee. He wore a black robe and a pointed hat. In his hand, he held a staff of black wood."

Chapter 9: The Turtle Moves

* Synopsis: After the wizard is defeated, Rincewind and Twoflower witness the Great A'Tuin, the giant turtle that carries the Discworld, moving. This event causes a cataclysmic earthquake that destroys Ankh-Morpork.
* Example: "The earth began to shake. Buildings collapsed and the ground cracked open. The Discworld was changing."
