Twilight

Synopsis

Three muffled thuds ring from the partially filled grave of the newly wed girl.

Only the verger hears them and he dismisses the noise as his imagination. But over the next few days others also hear faint sounds.

An exhumation order is granted. Reporter Kate Hemingway sneaks into the small suburban churchyard when the coffin is opened, and the scene she witnesses is so horrific she can never forget it. As she starts work on the story, Kate finds herself caught up in a sinister and macabre cover-up.

At the centre is a respected anaesthetist who has a secret obsession. He believes people can exist outside their bodies and that if he can prove it he will provide the answer to the question that has haunted mankind through the ages: is there life after death?

Nothing - and no one - is going to stand in the way of his driving ambition . . .

Summary

Chapter 1: The Move

Isabella "Bella" Swan moves from sunny Phoenix, Arizona, to the perpetually rainy town of Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie Swan, a police chief. Bella struggles to adjust to the gloomy weather and the lack of social opportunities.

Chapter 2: School Days

Bella starts attending Forks High School and meets Mike Newton, an outgoing and friendly student who develops a crush on her. She also meets the Cullen family, consisting of siblings Edward, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, and Jasper. Edward is particularly intriguing and mysterious, capturing Bella's attention.

Example: "Bella sat in the cafeteria, her eyes scanning the room. As they passed over the Cullen table, time seemed to slow down. Edward sat with his back to her, but his presence filled the room. His hair, a deep mahogany that caught the light in a way that made it seem to glow, was like nothing she had ever seen before."

Chapter 3: The Meadow

Bella encounters Edward in a meadow. He initially appears hostile but later explains that he is a vampire who follows a vegetarian diet. Edward is drawn to Bella's scent and develops a strong protective instinct for her.

Example: "Edward took a step towards her, his golden eyes piercing. 'You're different,' he said. 'You smell different.' Bella froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never thought of herself as having a particularly strong scent before."

Chapter 4: Charlie's Suspicions

Bella's father becomes suspicious of Edward and his frequent presence in Bella's life. He confronts Edward, but Edward deflects his questions with ease.

Chapter 5: The Game

Bella participates in a baseball game with the Cullens. Edward's supernatural abilities become evident as he effortlessly catches a ball that would have injured a normal player. Bella is both amazed and terrified by his powers.

Example: "Bella could see the ball coming towards her, a blur of white against the green grass. She raised her glove, but it was too late. The ball was going to hit her right in the face. Suddenly, a shadow fell over her. Edward was there, his hand extended in front of hers. The ball crashed into his hand with a loud crack, and he held it up for the world to see."

Chapter 6: The Accident

Bella witnesses a van accident and sees the Cullens using their powers to rescue the victims. Edward explains that they need to leave Forks to protect Bella from their enemies, the nomadic vampires.

Chapter 7: The Phone Call

Bella receives a phone call from James, a sadistic vampire who is hunting her. Edward rushes to her aid and helps her defeat James. Bella realizes the extent of Edward's love and devotion for her.

Example: "Edward's eyes met hers, and Bella knew that he had understood her. With a swift movement, he pulled her close and kissed her. It was a gentle, lingering kiss that made Bella feel like she had come home. When he finally pulled away, she looked into his eyes and saw nothing but love and determination."
