The Drawing of the Three, the second book in the Dark Tower series, is a fantasy novel by Stephen King. It involves the story of a gunslinger, Roland, as he travels across the parallel universes of Mid-World, Dashmiel and present-day America. The novel follows Roland as he draws three people from three of these worlds to help him complete his quest.
In chapter one, Roland is on the beach in the Mid-World and he is startled to find he has been pulled through a door to present-day America. As he steps through, he is confronted by the same person twice, first a young black woman and then later an elderly Native American man. He takes both as companions on his quest.
Chapter two begins with Roland’s return to Mid-World, but this time with his two new companions. As they travel, they encounter some obstacles, including giant lobstrosities and ferocious monarchs. Eventually, the group reaches a town and they are met with hostility by the inhabitants. Roland and his company must protect themselves as they venture further and closer to the Dark Tower.
In chapter three, Roland and his companions travel to a new world, Dashmiel, a strange realm where the laws of physics do not seem to apply. It is here they find their third companion, a woman named Odetta Holmes. Unlike Roland's previous two companions, Odetta has dual personalities that cause her to behave erratically. They soon discover she has been living in this world since her birth, possessed of powers and memories that make her different from the rest of the inhabitants.
Chapter four brings Odetta to the Mid-World and the group continues their trek towards the Dark Tower. As they make their way, they come across more obstacles and strange phenomena, and also a man named Jack Mort. They are able to defeat him with help from one of Roland's companions, as well as souvenirs they take from Jack Mort.
In chapter five, the group continues their quest and make their way across a mountain range. During this section, Odetta comes to terms with her identity and begins to make more cohesive choices. Towards the end of the chapter, they come across a fifth tarot card that shows a drawing of the three companions and with it further clues about the Dark Tower.
The final chapter of the book follows the group as they make their way closer and closer to the Dark Tower. As they travel, they come across several strange encounters and obstacles. Eventually, they reach the Dark Tower and they summon the strength and courage to face what lies ahead. After some difficult battles, they take a final stand against a powerful enemy that threatens to take control of the Tower, but with the help of their allies, they are able to triumph and Roland finally enters the Tower to begin the next part of his quest.
