Summary

Chapter 1: The Letter

* Lyra Belacqua, an 11-year-old girl, lives in Jordan College, Oxford.
* She receives a mysterious letter from Lord Asriel, her uncle, who has gone on an expedition to the Arctic.
* The letter contains a warning about a dangerous substance called Dust and a request for Lyra to join him.

Chapter 2: Jordan College

* Lyra explores the college, which is home to scholars and alchemists.
* She meets Roger Parslow, a boy her age who becomes her close friend.
* Lyra learns that her father, an explorer, has disappeared.

Chapter 3: The Alethiometer

* Lyra discovers an ancient artifact called the alethiometer, a device that can tell the truth.
* She is drawn to the alethiometer and learns how to use it.

Chapter 4: The Tartars

* A group of Tartars, kidnappers who steal children, arrives at Jordan College.
* Lyra and Roger are captured and taken away with other children.

Chapter 5: The North

* The children are transported to the frozen North by hot-air balloons.
* They witness the beauty and danger of the Arctic landscape.

Chapter 6: The Gobblers

* The children encounter the Gobblers, sinister creatures who experiment on children.
* Lyra uses the alethiometer to uncover their plans.

Chapter 7: Bolvangar

* The children are taken to Bolvangar, a prison camp where they are subjected to cruel treatments.
* Lyra and Roger find a way to escape and begin their journey to find Lord Asriel.
