In one of the most memorable novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewed version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now thirty-one, Never Let Me Go hauntingly dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at a seemingly idyllic school, Hailsham, and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world. A story of love, friendship and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

Kazuo Ishiguro (author), Geoff Barton (writer of added commentary)

Summary

Chapter 1

* Summary: Introduces Hailsham, a boarding school where the students are clones raised for organ donation. Hailsham is depicted as a idyllic place, where the students are well-cared for and isolated from the outside world.
* Example: "My name is Kathy H. I'm twenty-eight years old, and I live at the Cottages, which used to be Hailsham School. The Cottages is an annexe, a place we come to when we're ready to start our donations."

Chapter 2

* Summary: Kathy remembers her childhood at Hailsham and her friendships with Tommy and Ruth. The students participate in various activities, including artwork and counseling.
* Example: "We would lie on our mats, in the gym, and Miss Emily would play the piano. We'd close our eyes and listen. Then she'd tell us to draw what we'd heard."

Chapter 3

* Summary: Ruth becomes withdrawn and is later ferried away for her first donation. Kathy and Tommy visit her at the hospital after the procedure. Ruth is in pain and struggles with the realization of her purpose.
* Example: "It was the first time I'd seen what happened to us, first-hand. Ruth looked awful. She was pale and thin, with these huge rings under her eyes. Her hair, once so thick and shiny, had become dull and lifeless."

Chapter 4

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy begin a romantic relationship. The students discuss the outside world and their fears about the future. Miss Lucy, their guardian, becomes concerned about their conversations.
* Example: "We talked about everything, really. About the things we remembered from our childhood, about the times we'd been happy, about the things we were afraid of."

Chapter 5

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy are transferred to the Cottages. They meet Madame, who explains the donation process and the importance of "deferring" (delaying the final donation).
* Example: "She told us that the purpose of our deferrals was to keep us healthy and strong, so that we could donate more times."

Chapter 6

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy become donors. The donation process is described as painful and emotionally draining. Kathy reflects on the sacrifices they have made and the possibility of true love.
* Example: "The pain was excruciating. I felt like I was being torn apart. I could hear Tommy screaming in the next room."

Chapter 7

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy are allowed to reunite between donations. They spend their time together visiting the Norfolk Broads, a nature reserve. Kathy discovers a secret about Hailsham and the true nature of their existence.
* Example: "There was a secret, Tommy said. He'd heard it from Miss Emily, years ago. We were not special after all. We were not like Kathy and Ruth. We were not destined for greatness."

Chapter 8

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy confront Miss Emily about the truth. They learn that Hailsham was an experiment and that their clones were created solely for donation. Kathy and Tommy are devastated by the revelation.
* Example: "She told us that Hailsham was a lie. That we were not destined for anything special. That we were not special at all."

Chapter 9

* Summary: Kathy and Tommy make a plan to escape the Cottages. They seek help from Ruth, who has become a guardian at Hailsham. Ruth agrees to assist them, but their escape attempt fails.
* Example: "We didn't get far. The authorities were waiting for us. They took us back to the Cottages, where Madame punished us."

Chapter 10

* Summary: Kathy reflects on her life and the choices she has made. She comes to terms with her own mortality and the sacrifices she has endured. She bids farewell to Tommy and Ruth.
* Example: "I know I'm going to die. And I'm okay with that. I've had a good life. I've been loved. And I've loved."
