Gone Girl is a psychological thriller written by Gillian Flynn. It tells the story of Nick Dunne and his wife Amy's mysterious disappearance. It follows Nick as he attempts to find Amy while also being a suspect of her murder. Nick is left in a desperate search to prove his innocence as the media and public opinion turn against him.
Chapter One:
In Chapter One, the reader is introduced to Nick and Amy Dunne. It is revealed that Amy has gone missing and nobody knows what has happened to her. As Nick is questioned by Detective Rhonda Boney he begins to tell the events of that led up to her disappearance. It is revealed that the couple had a strained marriage and Nick was worried about how Amy’s family would see him. The desperation of not knowing what has happened to the woman he loves is evident in Nick’s behavior.
Chapter Two:
The second chapter follows Nick as he deals with the police investigation of Amy's disappearance. Nick visits the Gas N' Go, from where it is believed that the last footage of Amy was taken. Nick is shocked when he finds out that someone had left an empty can of diet Coke there in what may have been an effort to frame him. After this discovery, soon everyone around him begins to question Nick's innocence.
Chapter Three:
The third chapter focuses on the media attention that Nick's case has gathered. Nick must now battle against the media and public opinion that he is the prime suspect in Amy's disappearance. He also has to deal with the reactions of his sister and friends who are mixed in their beliefs of Nick's innocence. Nick reluctantly agrees to a television interview in order to try and prove his innocence.
Chapter Four:
In Chapter Four, the reader is introduced to Amy's diary which is being carefully read by the police in order to find evidence to support their suspicions of Nick. They also release a press release calling Nick the prime suspect in Amy's disappearance. The press release affects Nick in a negative way as many people begin to assume he is guilty of his wife's disappearance.
Chapter Five:
The fifth chapter follows Nick as the police search his house and he must deal with all the negative publicity he is receiving. Nick is feeling isolated as he struggles to form a plan to prove his innocence. He then receives a package from Amy in the mail that contains a clue to her disappearance. Nick is faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to share the clue with the police.
Chapter Six:
In Chapter Six, Nick decides to share the clue with the police and a disbelieving Detective Rhonda. After a lengthy search, the police are unable to find the location referenced in the clue. Nick and Detective Rhonda then follow up on a few of Amy's old acquaintances in an effort to find her whereabouts.
Chapter Seven:
The seventh chapter follows the police investigation as it leads them to a house where Amy may be held. When they search the house, they find Amy's car and items that belong to her, confirming Nick's suspicions that somebody had been holding her against her will in the house. The police and Nick then learn that the house was owned by one of Amy's close friends and former lover.
Chapter Eight:
In Chapter Eight, the police investigate further and find out that there was a plan by Amy's former lover to frame Nick for her disappearance. Nick is ultimately cleared of all suspicion and reunited with Amy. In the end, this chapter shows that Nick was a victim of circumstance and was not guilty of the crime he was accused of.
Epilogue:
The epilogue follows Nick and Amy's lives after the events of the book. Nick and Amy are back together and are trying to put their lives back together. Amy is now writing a book about her experiences and about how she dealt with the trauma of what happened to her. The epilogue shows that although Nick and Amy have gone through a lot of pain and suffering, they are still able to find some semblance of peace.
