Synopsis

Summary

Chapter 1: The Academy

Bradley Trevor Grice is a retired private investigator haunted by the unsolved case of a serial killer, Brady Hartsfield, who paralyzed him in 1988. Grice is contacted by a young writer, Holly Gibney, who offers to help solve the case.

Chapter 2: David's Red X

Holly shows Grice a book written by Mr. Mercedes, the pseudonym used by the killer. The book contains a cryptic message: "David's Red X." Grice realizes it refers to a storage unit owned by the victim's brother.

Chapter 3: Better Together

Grice and Holly investigate the storage unit and discover a cache of disturbing items. They team up with Jerome Robinson, a former detective who was also a victim of Hartsfield, and Peter Saubers, a retired FBI agent.

Chapter 4: The Box in the Gate

The team discovers a cardboard box at the gate of the storage unit. Inside is a live bomb and a chilling note from Hartsfield: "I'm back."

Chapter 5: Cell Block D

Hartsfield escapes from prison and sets his sights on killing Grice and his allies. The team races against time to find Hartsfield and stop him before he strikes again.

Chapter 6: Children in the Trees

Hartsfield's targets include children, and he has planted bombs in their homes. Grice and Holly must locate the bombs and save the children.

Chapter 7: The Bloody Bridge

Hartsfield confronts Grice on a narrow bridge. In a tense standoff, Grice faces his fears and ultimately confronts his nemesis.

Finders Keepers

Chapter 1:

Morris Bellamy, a reclusive old man, dies and leaves behind a fortune and a mysterious manuscript.

Chapter 2:

Pete Saubers, a retired detective, becomes curious about the manuscript and starts to investigate.

Chapter 3:

Holly Gibney joins Pete and meets Morris's elderly widow, Ida. Ida tells them about Morris's obsession with a serial killer named John Rothstein.

Chapter 4:

Pete and Holly discover that Rothstein was executed 20 years ago. However, the manuscript contains clues that suggest Rothstein may still be alive.

Chapter 5:

Pete and Holly track down Rothstein's former executioner, who reveals that the execution was faked and Rothstein escaped.

Chapter 6:

Pete and Holly confront Rothstein and learn that he has been blackmailing Morris for years.

Chapter 7:

Rothstein threatens to kill Ida if Pete and Holly don't back off. They desperately search for a way to stop him.

Chapter 8:

Pete remembers that he has an interview with a woman who claims to have been a victim of Rothstein.

Chapter 9:

The woman, named Lou Linklatter, confirms that Rothstein is still alive.

Chapter 10:

Pete, Holly, and Lou join forces to track down Rothstein and bring him to justice.

Chapter 11:

The trio confronts Rothstein in his hideout. A tense standoff ensues, and Rothstein is ultimately killed.
