Summary

Chapter 1: Missing

The story begins in 1922, when Anthony Cade goes missing after a weekend visit to the Dower House, a country estate owned by his aunt, Lady Eileen Brent. His disappearance leaves the family and police baffled. Detective Superintendent Anthony Gillingham is assigned to investigate.

Gillingham visits the Dower House and interviews the household members. He learns that Anthony had an argument with his father, Sir Hubert Cade, before his disappearance. Gillingham also notes the presence of a young woman, Margaret Grey, who was staying at the house as a guest.

Two days later, Anthony's body is found in a swamp near the house. He has been shot in the back. Gillingham suspects foul play and intensifies the investigation.

Real Example

In the novel, Nurse Hopkins testifies that she saw Anthony leave the house on the night of his disappearance. However, Gillingham discovers that her alibi is false. She had been in the kitchen when Anthony was shot, and she had lied to protect the real killer.
